Kentucky Virtual Advanced Placement Academy
2002 Senate Bill 74 “An Act Relating to College Preparatory Educational Programs” requires secondary school-based decision making councils to offer a core curriculum of advanced placement, dual credit or dual enrollment using either or both on-site and online instruction beginning with the 2003-04 school year. The councils are charged with establishing policies to recruit students into advanced course work and to recognize the right of all students to be academically challenged and encouraged to work at this level.
To assist school in fulfilling this obligation, the same legislation directs the Department of Education to establish the Kentucky Virtual Advanced Placement Academy as part of the Kentucky Virtual High School. The Academy will offer the Core Curriculum required by SB 74.
The Core Curriculum is defined as at least one course in at least four of these six subject areas:
- Social Studies
- Foreign Languages
- The Arts
The Kentucky Advanced Placement Academy will offer Advanced Placement courses in the Core Curriculum and is securing dual credit and articulation agreements with colleges and universities in the Core Curriculum for the upcoming school year. These offerings will continue to expand.
As explained in the Advanced Placement Online Fact Sheet , KVHS offers schools more than one way to provide high-quality Advanced Placement courses to students and to prepare them for success on the AP exams:
- Enroll students in online courses taught by well-qualified KVHS teachers
- Use the Course Companion model, which puts a solid online curriculum in the hands or your teacher
- Provide students with an Online Exam Review to boost their performance on the exam
Further information about the Kentucky Advanced Placement Academy and the how the academy can help schools meet the requirements of the new legislation will be sent to schools in late June. In the interim, please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or for assistance with expanded college preparatory opportunities in your school.
