Unit
1 - Your Tools
Reading
Within your online course, there are several options for communicating with
your instructor and classmates. Most of these options do not require that
you are online at the same time as the people with whom you want to
communicate.
- Notebook
- Journal
- Document Sharing
- Online Chatroom
- Message Center
- Email
- Webliography
Notebook
The Notebook feature provides you with a place to record your notes and
ideas electronically. With the Notebook, you can easily store and retrieve
information from within your online course. To see an example of this
feature, click on the Notebook link, located on
the left-side navigation menu.
Journal
The Journal is a communication tool designed for use between you and your
instructor. You can post comments in the Journal and your instructor can
respond through the Gradebook tool. To see an example of this feature,
click on the Journal link, located on the
left-side navigation menu.
Document Sharing
Document Sharing gives you and your instructor the ability to upload and
download documents, images, spreadsheets, HTML pages, and small programs.
This tool allows you to share and view these files, then rebuild, revise,
or recreate them. To learn more, click on the Document
Sharing link, located on the left-side navigation menu.
Online Chatroom
Along with your classmates and instructor, you can use the Online Chatroom
feature to join in "real time", synchronous discussions. Many
students have found the Online Chatroom to be an effective tool for both
group and one-on-one chats, interactive study sessions and for meeting with
their instructor during designated office hours. To see an example of this
feature, click on the Chatroom link, located on the
left-side navigation menu.
The Message Center
This feature was designed to mimic the function of a "bulletin board".
In the Message Center, the instructor can post important dates, reminders,
revisions, or any important information that comes up over the course of
the semester. You will find the Message Center on your Course Homepage
every time you login. To see an example of this feature, click on the Message Center link, located on the left-side
navigation menu.
Email Class
The Email Class feature allows you to send messages to your instructor and
classmates without having to leave your online course. This feature gives
you the option of sending an email to your entire class, selected members
of your class, your instructor, or any combination thereof. This feature
also gives you the ability to send file attachments with your message. To
see an example of this feature, click on the Email
Class link, located on the left-side navigation menu.
Webliographysm
The Webliographysm is an annotated bibliography of World Wide
Web sites, allowing students and instructors to build a virtual library of
Web links. Use of the Webliographysm is unique for each
particular course, but in every case both you and your instructor have the
ability to submit sites. The Webliographysm can add enormous
value to the online course environment. To learn more, click on the Webliographysm link, located on the
left-side navigation menu.
