Latin III

Course Objective

Latin III class is designed to increase vocabulary and assist students in completion of the corpus of grammar required to read many authentic Latin writings. Through authentic writings as well as stories in the Ecce Romani text, students will increase their understanding of the culture of the Roman world. By listening to poetry and narratives on the Internet, writing from dictations on the Internet and responding to oral stimuli in Latin, students will also develop aural/oral skills which will be a useful carryover to modern language study.

Latin III students will:
  • have a thorough review of the materials covered in Latin I and II.
  • receive an agenda for the academic year
  • access daily lessons via the Internet
  • access oral readings via the Internet
  • access video clips from the Internet
  • contact the teacher or tutors on assigned days via a toll free number
  • complete assignments, quizzes and tests according to the schedule
  • use the Ecce Romani series
  • download the works of the ancients from the Internet
  • increase their abilities to work on the Internet

Schedule

The Latin III class is a student directed class taught via Internet which will augment the student's grammar and vocabulary skills, increase reading proficiency through cultural and historical presentations and student participation via phone and the Internet. Students will be given time for cooperative activities, research projects, and practice of concepts. Via the Internet, color photos, sound, formatted text and video clips are incorporated in the lesson. Agenda and assignments are posted on the Internet. Students call the teacher and tutors on specified days.

Instructor Bio:
A native of Connecticut, Joan moved to Kentucky in 1991. She previously taught Latin, French and Computer Use in Rye, NY for 12 years. Joan served as advisor and mentor for Student Council, Junior Class, Latin and French clubs and was chairman of the Foreign Language Department for several years. Prior to teaching at KET, Joan had assisted with both the Latin I and Latin II programs at KET. She has also taught Latin, (Levels I through AP IV) at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington, KY. Joan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Albertus Magnus College, in Connecticut, with a major in Latin and minors in French and Education. Her Master of Arts degree is in French, from Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT. Joan holds teaching certification in Latin and French in Connecticut, New York and Kentucky.
